Great Southern Bioblitz

What is the Great Southern Bioblitz?

A BioBlitz is a survey of biodiversity within a specified area time frame. During this period, participants aim to find and record as many species as possible within the time frame. BioBlitzes are a great way to learn more about the biodiversity of an area, including discovering new species and recording species range extensions.

The Great Southern BioBlitz is an opportunity for all Southern Hemisphere countries to record organisms during Spring and showcase our beautiful biodiversity to the world. The event is run by a grassroots network of keen citizen scientists from across the globe.

How can I get involved?

Join us for an afternoon of exploring the plants and animals of the Campaspe area, and be a part of the Great Southern Bioblitz.

Saturday 21st September
2pm to 5pm
Nanneella Bushland Reserve

774 Echuca-Nanneella Road
Nanneella VIC 3561

To get ready for the event:
- Download the iNaturalist app or create an account on your computer:
- Join the Campaspe project on iNaturalist to have your observations collated as part of the bioblitz.
- Get to know the app and have some fun recording observations of the plants and animals you see around you.

What to bring:

- A fully charged phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. If you don't have a smartphone, bring a camera and notebook, so you can upload your observations to your computer after the event.

- Sturdy shoes

- BYO picnic afternoon tea. There are picnic tables at the reserve.

- Water bottle

The 2024 Great Southern Bioblitz runs 20-23 September. Any observations you record during this time can be collated. If you can't make it to the catch up at the reserve, you can still record observations on iNaturalist during the bioblitz period. If you are from the Campaspe area, join the Campaspe project and that will help to gather the local observations.

If you're from a different area, check out the Great Southern Bioblitz area projects on iNaturalist - there may be one local to you.
